  • 2018: Winner of the travel grant to attend the Awards Ceremony Kavli in Oslo, Norway.

  • 2017: Simón Bolívar Journalism Award, Press-Interview Category, to physicist Roy Glauber, "The Last Survivor of the Manhattan Project" , Bocas magazine.

  • 2016: First Prize for Environmental Journalism by CORMAGDALENA / SEMANA MAGAZINE based on the article "Río Magdalena: Liquid soul, heart of sand", presented in INTELLECTA MAGAZINE.

  • 2015: Faith in the Cause Medal , conferred by the Colombian Navy for special services during the First Antarctic Scientific Expedition of Colombia.

  • 2014: Byron H. Waksman Award for Excellence in Life Sciences Public Communication. "You were selected based on the different types of communication you engage in, and in particular, for your series of children's books on science in English and Spanish."

  • 2013: TheCervantes Prize is awarded by the Hispanic Advisory Board of Nova Southeastern University and the University Abraham S. Fischler School of Education. Each year, each school board member presents the Cervantes Award during Hispanic Heritage Month to community members who make significant contributions to promoting excellence in the education of Hispanic students.

  • 2013: Recognition from the Miami Dade School Board.

  • Dec. 2012: Was included in the first group honored as 100 Colombians living abroad by the Colombian government.

  • 2012: He was accepted into the first HiPACC High Energy Computational Astronomy Fellowship at the University of California Santa Cruz, USA.

  • 2011 - Recipient of the Antarctic Service Medal in recognition of valuable contributions to exploration and scientific achievement under the United States Antarctic Program, awarded by the National Science Foundation.

  • 2011: Co-chair of the 21st Conference of the National Society of Environmental Journalists , SEJ in Miami

  • 2011: Guest speaker at TEDxPura Vida, Costa Rica and TEDx JOVEN Pura Vida, Costa Rica (the latter dedicated to inspiring youth).

  • 2010: He was included in the first group honored as the Miami 100 Latinos , to recognize the inspiring and successful Latin Americans in Miami.

  • 2010: Winner of the "Premio Sacyr" award, a new science journalism award in Spain directed by respected science writer Eduard Punset.

  • 2009 : Named Co-Director of the Logan Polar Program for Science Journalists, at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA, USA.

  • 2009: Member of the jury in the Emmy International Awards category: scientific documentary in English.

  • 2009 - 2010: Recipient of the Logan Polar Fellowship awarded by the Marine Biology Laboratory to spend a month researching at Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • 2009: Guest speaker at Aventura Espacial, Colombia. An educational / inspirational event that brought 24,000 children together for 3 days in Colombia to learn about astronomy and space. An event described by the United Nations as "unique in the International Year of Astronomy".

  • 2006: Recipient of the NSF Antarctic Travel Fellowship for Journalists, to visit the South Pole. First Hispanic.

  • 2001: Aeronautical and Space Journalist of the Year, New England Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)

  • 2001: Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT . First Hispanic to obtain this fellowship.

  • Two Emmy nominations, for the script in Spanish of a series on the nature of Bolivia, broadcast on Travel Channel in 1990, and for a biography of Christopher Columbus, broadcast on Telemundo in 1992

  • 1997: Recipient of the Science Writers Fellowship by the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, Ma, to attend classes ranging from cell biology to long-term environmental projects. The fellowship included a two-week trip to the Alaskan Arctic Tundra, north of the Brooks Range, to report on a study on global climate change.

  • 1995: First Prize, Business and Investigative Journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists for a three-part series on the illegal wildlife trade in The Miami Herald.
